Animal Friends, Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA is a progressive 501(c)3 caring for the physical, mental and behavioral well-being of the animals in our care. For 75 years, we have continually set and raised the bar for humane programming in the Pittsburgh region.
The commitment we make to our animals allows our veterinarian to practice the full spectrum of medicine and to follow up with cases. We are looking for a veterinarian who enjoys practicing quality medicine while working in the fast paced shelter environment.
Our Shelter Hospital Veterinarian is supported by a Senior Medical Coordinator who is responsible for medical staff supervision and most administrative duties, as well as a group of qualified, experienced technicians, a behavioral department, an enrichment team, humane investigations officers, and a large and dedicated group of volunteers and fosters. We also enjoy a close working relationship with an emergency and specialty practice right less than a mile away.
Our medical department is fully equipped with digital x-ray, in-house blood machines, a dental suite with digital x-ray, and a full surgical suite which includes ultrasound and cold laser.
Hospital responsibilities include:
Orchestrating medical care of cats, dogs, and rabbits in our care in-house and in foster care
Surgery including but not limited to spay/neuter (including pediatric)
Other surgeries including but not limited to amputations, enucleations, mass removals, cystotomies, etc.
Working collaboratively with other departments for the best outcome of each animal
Supporting humane investigations cases
Development of SOPs
Disease outbreak management
Education of staff and volunteers.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD)
Eligible to be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Pennsylvania. (We will pay fees.)
Current DEA license for controlled substances. (We will pay for renewal fees.)
Willingness and ability to work hours necessary for successful organizational operations and care of the 250+ animals on site, including coverage on some weekends, holidays, and evenings.
