Position: Associate Veterinarian
Summary:
Associate Veterinarians perform various functions to keep client’s pets in good health. The Associate Veterinarian is responsible for overseeing the operations of the hospital and the medical care of all patients while on duty. Additionally the Associate Veterinarian may perform spay/neuter and other soft-tissue surgeries. The Associate Veterinarian provides direction and leadership toward the hospital’s mission, vision, and values, and operates within the policies and procedures of the lake Shore Pet Hospital.
Essential Functions:
Ensure overall health, diagnosis, and treatment of pets. This includes proper intake and screening in accordance with the shelter’s operating procedures;
Use diagnostic equipment such as In-house laboratory and digital X-ray equipment to identify the cause of an illness;
Conduct regular medical examinations of client’s pets;
Prescribe medications, administer inoculations, and perform surgeries to treat animal health conditions;
Neuter animals through spaying operation to prevent them from having offspring;
Immunize pets to protect them against various diseases;
Ensure that surgical standards are met in accordance with best practices, and that the surgical center runs efficiently and effectively;
Insert identification microchips and provide appropriate paperwork for pets;
Collect and examine blood, urine, feces, and tissue samples during diagnosis;
Realign broken pets bones and apply splints or casts to immobilize a fracture;
Execute quarantine processes to prevent spread of disease from one pet to others;
Duties and Responsibilities:
Proper documentation of pets medical records in a timely manner;
Proffer recommendations to pet owners on ways to feed, clean, and care for pets to promote their health;
Liaise with other veterinarians and animal care professionals to develop effective treatment plan for pets;
Educate the public on ways to avoid diseases that spread from animals to man;
Monitor foods pets consume to ensure they are safe and beneficial to health;
Other duties as assigned by management.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Guide and direct the activities of veterinarian assistants and technicians
Education and/or Experience:
Requires a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Hold and maintain a current Maryland Veterinary License in good standing;
Hold and maintain Accreditation, DEA License, Maryland Controlled Substance License;
Maintain Professional and Personal Liability insurance.
Skills:
Be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients and staff.
Be able to implement treatment plans and effective in addressing animal health problems
Be able to determine the best course of treatment for different kinds of ailments.
The Associate Veterinarian Assistant must have strong computer skills in both hardware and software applications;
Must be proficient with MS Office (MS Word, MS Excel, etc…
Must be proficient with both PC and Mac based computer operating systems;
Must be proficient with Google Chrome and veterinary related software;
