The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is now accepting applications for a Veterinarian in the hospital’s Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care (ECC/ICU) section. LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion, equine, and food animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents, interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state of the art care for over 25,000 patients per year.
DVM graduates who have completed a small animal rotating internship are encouraged to apply.
This position will provide coverage for swing shifts, including night/day shifts and weekends, along with required holiday coverage.
The successful candidate will join a team of 2 ACVECC boarded specialists, 3 ER staff doctors, 3 ECC residents, 7 rotating interns, and 15 licensed veterinary technicians providing care to emergency and critically ill patients in an ACVECC level II accredited facility and one of 30 registered trauma centers in the United States. The ER staff veterinarian position focuses efforts on day-to-day service delivery. The ER staff veterinarian is expected to review cases with house officers and students to ensure that plans and patient care are appropriate, often facilitated through service rounds, which includes examining patients, listening to student case presentations, reviewing diagnostics performed, and reviewing treatment plans/sheets. The ER veterinarian will function as primary veterinarian on cases as necessary.
The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, be self-motivated, able to work independently or with a team, and be detail oriented. There will be opportunities to grow their skills related to emergency and critical care within a cohesive team of professionals. Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational qualities, and effective oral and written communications are necessary to be successful in this position. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work with and supervise the work of others. Lastly, maintaining a professional, positive, compassionate, and empathetic nature towards the clients and patients of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center is essential for success in this position.
