Great Plains SPCA is seeking a Chief Veterinarian at the shelter in Merriam, Kansas. The Chief Veterinarian provides first-class medical care to shelter animals and leads the Shelter Medicine staff to be a high-performing team. Responsibilities include the following:
Provide quality diagnostics and best medicine to all pets in our care
Perform spay and neuter and other surgical procedures
Provide excellent customer service and support to our adopters, fosters and staff through effective communication, education and compassion
Practice veterinary medicine in a manner compliant with the State Veterinary Practice Act, Federal and/or State Controlled Substance laws, along with appropriate medical record documentation; ensure the team maintains complete medical records that meet practice quality control
Direct, lead and mentor other Veterinarians and Technicians
Deliver strong business results while driving a positively aligned team
Promote the safety of pets, clients, staff and volunteers by ensuring the Shelter Medicine team is utilizing safe restraining techniques, Fear Free techniques, following standard practice guidelines, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and laboratory
Maintain drug logs in accordance with DEA, DOA, and Kansas Veterinary Board.
Oversee the department’s ordering of supplies, budget, and expenses. Drive efficiencies that best utilize our donor dollars and serve our pets' needs.
Manage the team’s schedule and adjust hours to business needs
First point of contact for after hours medical emergencies.
Collaborate with and support other departments, including but not limited to Adoptions, Animal Care, Behavior, Foster, HERO, and Admissions.
Stay up to date with new medical information and changes in veterinary medicine, attend Continuing Education trainings.
Positively represent the shelter in the professional community and to the general public.
Position requirements:
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Kansas
Current or eligible for DEA license
Competent with computer functions and programs such as Internet and web-based programs, Microsoft Office, Excel, and PetPoint
