Reports to the Vice President for Research. General responsibilities include oversight and fiscal management of the operation of the Comparative Medicine Unit (CMU) and service as the Attending Veterinarian for NEOMED and as a non-tenure track faculty member of the University. Has direct and/or delegated authority and responsibility for activities involving animals at NEOMED. May also serve as the alternate attending veterinarian for the animal care programs at NEOMED affiliated institutions.

Principal Functional Responsibilities 1) Directs the overall operation of the CMU; oversees preparation of the annual CMU budget and periodic cost accounting of operations to determine accurate service and per diem rates.
2) Develops and directs implementation of policy regarding the operation of the CMU and the animal care program to maintain compliance with the Animal Welfare Act regulations, the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the National Research Council Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the requirements for accreditation by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.
3) Directly supervises the CMU Assistant Director including conducting their periodic performance evaluations; indirectly supervises the balance of CMU staff. Provides oversight and back up to staff veterinarian providing contractual veterinary service to consortium institutions.
4) Serves as the attending veterinarian on the NEOMED Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; reviews all animal use protocols for compliance with appropriate standards of animal care and use; participates in semiannual facility and program evaluations; provides IACUC training for IACUC members; compares grant applications with animal use protocols for congruence.
5) Directs and oversees veterinary care for all animals used at NEOMED. Provides guidance to, and consultation with, research personnel regarding animal use in research, training and testing, including, but not limited to, appropriate animal model selection, surgery, experimental manipulation, anesthesia, analgesia, euthanasia, treatment, care, and research protocol design. Develops standard operating procedures for laboratory animal anesthesia, analgesia, euthanasia, surgery, and other aspects of laboratory animal use as needed.
6) Develops programs for, and oversees provision of training in laboratory animal care, husbandry and use to CMU staff, research investigators, research technicians, graduate students and others who may work with laboratory animals. Course Director for surgical training course for surgical residents from NEOMED affiliated institutions; participates in animal-based research, teaching, and testing activities as needed. Functions as the lead author and Principal Investigator for funding opportunities in pursuit of CMU and animal care program enhancements and improvements. Serves on relevant NEOMED committees as determined by the Vice President for Research
7) Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education/Degrees: Graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited college of veterinary medicine.
License/Memberships: Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Ohio. Valid licensure to acquire, prescribe and use controlled substances by the Drug Enforcement Administration of the Department of Justice. Accredited or eligible for accreditation in Category II of the National Veterinary Accreditation Program. Successful candidate will be supported towards and expected to pursue board-certification from The American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Inc.
Experience: Minimum of five years experience as a laboratory animal medicine veterinary practitioner or scientist or technician. Minimum of three years experience as a director, associate director or equivalent leadership role in an animal care program of comparable size.
