INTERNSHIP INFORMATION:

Internship Established: 2003
Number of Internships Available: 4-5 openings (4-5 total
interns per year)

Estimated Workload: 50-60 hrs/week

Philosophy of Internship: The goal of our internship is to
provide interns with a high quality experience which
balances in-hospital, ambulatory and academic veterinary
medicine. Interns will have the experience and knowledge to
begin a career in private equine ambulatory practice or
pursue residency in a variety of fields upon successful
completion of the program. The internship provides the
veterinarian with an equivalent of approximately 5 year’s
worth of private practice experience. Our internship
tailors mentorship towards the professional goals of the
individual to help them succeed in their personal goals.
Interns acquire knowledge through diligent research of
cases that come through the hospital and out in the field.
At the conclusion of the internship, veterinarians are
proficient in clinical skills (nasogastric intubation, IV
catheterization, abdominal ultrasound, abdominocentesis,
regional limb perfusion, diagnostic anesthesia, intraarticular
injection, uterine lavage, neonatal care and
restraint), evaluation of the first opinion and referred
equine acute abdomen, common equine emergencies, field
anesthesia, inhalant anesthesia, client communication, and
much more. We provide guidance and active training so
interns leave Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center prepared
for a successful career in equine medicine.
