The ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Science Center (AVFSC) in Gainesville, Florida, is the nation’s first and only multidisciplinary forensic laboratory in the US dedicated to animal cruelty casework involving companion and other domestic animals. We are pleased to offer a 2-4 week externship opportunity at our state-of-the-art facility for veterinary students in their 3rd or 4th year.
Mentorship
Our diverse team composed of 4 forensic veterinarians, 2 crime scene analysists, and 1 veterinary forensic technician will empower you to prevent and respond to animal cruelty within your community.
Real-World Applications
Students will be actively involved in casework, including necropsies. Students will be given a mock live animal case and mock necropsy to work through if there are no new cases during their externship.
Deployment
Due to national response casework, students may participate in field deployment to assist with a range of large-scale alleged animal cruelty/neglect cases such as animal hoarding, dogfighting, cockfighting, and inadequate breeding operations. Deployment is not guaranteed.
Across the US, the ASPCA® employs hundreds of veterinarians and veterinary technicians at stationary and mobile clinics, temporary shelters, forensic labs, and remotely in consultative roles with animal shelters and veterinary practices. In fact, 1 out of every 10 staff members at the ASPCA is a licensed veterinarian, making the ASPCA the ideal training ground for veterinary and veterinary technician students and DVMs seeking continuing education. We invite you to explore the wide range of opportunities.
