Oversees Middlebury's AAALAC-accredited Laboratory Animal Facility program, ensuring that laboratory animals receive proper care, that the requirements of approved protocols are fully met, that staffing levels are appropriate, and that the animal facility and satellite animal laboratories are maintained and operated in compliance with federal regulations and institutional requirements.

This is a full time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $50,053 - $66,314 annually.

Core Responsibilities:

• Works with faculty, students, and staff to ensure that vertebrate, invertebrate, and marine animals receive care in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and experimental protocols, and manages the vivarium facility and staff to ensure that that appropriate support services for investigators are furnished.
• Serves as supervisor and team leader of all animal care staff, hiring staff, confirming quality of work, and providing technical guidance.
• Consults and works with the attending veterinarian to diagnose, evaluate, and treat animal health issues, developing documentation for standard operating procedures and other activities, as needed.
• Ensures that animal procedures, including surgery and pre- and post-operative care, asepsis, drug administration, and euthanasia are carried out in accordance with applicable veterinary standards.
• Participates in programs reviews, regulatory site visits and inspections for IACUC, AAALAC and USDA.
• Ensures that quality assurance, testing, and monitoring of vivarium systems and equipment is carried out, implementing appropriate corrective measures as needed.
• Conducts training sessions for staff, faculty, and students, as required, including but not limited to animal care and facility usage.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge on animal care regulations, practices, and procedures by regular participation in such training activities as conferences and seminars.

Position Prerequisites:

• Bachelor's degree in biology, animal science, or a related field. Post-graduate study in animal medicine or the equivalent in work experience preferred.

• Must be AALAS RLAT certified or eligible; RLATg preferred.
• At least 3 years' experience in a laboratory animal facility working directly with animals is required.

• Must have working knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations, principles and techniques of laboratory animal husbandry, and the diagnosis and evaluation of animal health issues.

• Must be focused, detail-oriented, reliable, and able to work both independently and as an effective member of the animal care team, as well as with other staff, students, faculty, and administrators.

• Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to apply relevant scientific concepts and terminology. • Affinity for animals and respect for their welfare is essential.
• Overtime, weekend, and holiday work is expected.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

· Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. (bags of feed and bedding), and to roll loaded tall cage and cage wash carts throughout the facility and be capable of bending and stretching to inspect and change cages at above- and below eye-level.

· Must not have allergies to animals to a degree that prevents performance of required duties.
