POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Washington State University (WSU) Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks to fill a full-time open rank (assistant professor/associate professor/professor) continuous career track faculty position in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECC). The successful applicant will join 3 Veterinary ECC faculty members (ACVECC Diplomates), and a dedicated team of 4 ECC residents, 10 ECC specialty interns, a technician supervisor (VTS-ECC), 13 licensed veterinary technicians and technician assistants, and 3 patient service coordinators. Salary range is $150,000 - $190,000 per year, depending on qualifications and level of experience and includes a generous benefits package.
The ECC services’ strategic plan includes expansion of all levels of staffing and services to facilitate operation of parallel critical care and emergency services. State-of-the-art equipment and facilities are currently available within the service and hospital and include the capability for long term mechanical ventilation, point-of-care ultrasound, multi-parameter monitoring system, in-house laboratories, thromboelastography (TEG), on-site blood bank, digital radiography, 3T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, computed tomography (CT), and electrodiagnostic equipment. Endoscopy, bronchoscopy, laparoscopy, and arthroscopy are also available.
The ECC Services receive referral cases from a large geographical area including Washington, Oregon, Montana, Alaska, and Canada, and provide support to the surrounding community and nearly every small animal service within the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) in Pullman, Washington. Our VTH is the leading referral center in the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest with over 20,000 patient visits per year, aspiring to be the country’s best academic veterinary hospital for patients, students, clients, colleagues, and community. The joint mission of the VTH and VCS is to improve the health and well-being of all animals through excellence in medical care, training future veterinarians, and finding innovative ways to diagnose and treat disease. Dedicated to this vision and mission are more than 60 full-time faculty members and 170 staff and house officers.
RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will emphasize clinical service and clinical teaching, with approximately 65% effort devoted to these activities. The successful candidate will provide clinical ECC service for the VTH and clinical instruction of professional veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Remaining effort will comprise classroom/laboratory teaching and/or collaborative research/scholarship within the candidate’s area of interest.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree (VMD, BVSc) and have completed an approved residency program in emergency and critical care designed to achieve board certification by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) or the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC), by date of hire.
The successful applicant should be able to effectively communicate and work collegially and collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds and demonstrate a commitment and relevant ability to successfully advocate for diversity and values of diversity and inclusion.
Applicants for associate professor or professor should have a proportionally higher level of scholarship or clinical and teaching experience along with a higher level of national/international recognition as compared to assistant professor applicants.
Considerations regarding rank will be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the candidate, as will division of time between clinical duty, teaching, and scholarly activity.
